Empire State of Mind has created a regression for many folks (mostly new fans who know of Jay-Z, but not much else) who want to find out how good this guy is, or has been. Fortunately he has a pedigree of music that legitimizes what he is capable of. Hip hop has meant jack shit to me as a middle class white guy at 48; I haven’t felt any connection with Hip Hp even as my kids have- and their tastes have been questionable. So “New York” is just a part of the package; I have no interest in one hit wonders & a musical genre that hasn’t proven it can last the test of time. Perhaps Jay-Z is the Elvis of this generation. He and the songwriters have connected with me and created a latch between my boys and their parents. My wife and I have been connected to all kinds of music for years and we are open to anything – that has talent. This man has the potential to create a legacy that crosses race and is recognized for the ability to erase ‘the lines’ that separate. Keep it up Kid. Do not crash & burn…like Elvis. You say music transcends and it’s not about the money. Stay on the line.
Jay-Z, i don’t know what rap would have been without your Z. you are just so amazing, the you rap makes me feel as if rap is so easy but anytime i try it i fiind it difficult to breath, i mess up myself. I adore you wish i could one day have the opportunity to just watch you on stage.
I wish you what you wish for yourself big brother
I loved this documentary! Loved it! It really touched me. Great clips, great cinematography, fantastic soundbites! Mr. Carter says some amazing things about collaboration, about ageless music, and growing up in New York.
Mad props to Danny Clinch, Jay-Z, and Absolut for making this!
